- Founded on the 27th day of the Holy Month of Ramadhan in 1307 AH (Corresponding to 1890 AD) by a few community leaders on the initiative of the then Prince of Arcot, His Highness M. Munawar Khan Bahadur.
- Registered under the Literary, Scientific and Charitable Societies Act of 1860, on 5th October 1894 and subsequently under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act in the year 1978.
- Initially started inside the Historic Walajah Mosque in Triplicane, Chennai under the guidance of late Janab. Shamsul Ulama Moulvi Haji Ghulam Rasool Sahib.
- Initially AHI provided food and accommodation to Muslim Orphan and destitute Boys which gradually blossomed into an institution for Formal and Islamic Education.
- Similar services and facilities were extended to girls too.
- On 24th August 1948, the foundation stone in this campus was laid by the late Honorable Shri Rajagopalachari, the then Governor General of India.
- In the year 1964 with the generous donations received from the well wishers, a grand Masjid was constructed which was completed in the year 1969.His Excellency, Anas Yousuf Yassin, the then Ambassador of Saudi Arabia inaugurated the Masjid.
- On 22nd February,1968, the Boys Home building was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Thiru C.N. Annadurai.
- In the year 1972, AHI developed a commercial complex named after its President, Justice Basheer Ahmed Sayeed, at Second Line Beach to augment its income and to sustain its activities.
- In 1974, the Girls Home was constructed and donated to AHI by its President Late Janab. Alhaj T. Abdul Wahid Sahib. On 16th June 1974, His Excellency Fakruddin Ali Ahmed, Union Minister for Food and Agriculture ( who later became the President of India) declared open the Girls Home which was named as "T. AHMADI BEGUM GIRLS HOME" in memory of the AHI President's late daughter Mrs. T. Ahmadi Begum Sahiba.
- In 1993, the Anjuman e Himayath e Islam (AHI) established NCVT-approved Himayath Industrial Training Centre to impart employable skills in Electrical, Plumbing and Refrigeration to Anjuman boys and outside students.
- In 2000, the Anjuman Matriculation Higher Secondary School was constructed and donated to AHI by Janab. K.U. Abdulla Sahib, Governing Body Member of AHI. On 4th March 2000, Her Excellancy M. Fathima Beevi. Governor of Tamilnadu, declared open the Anjuman Matriculation Higher Secondary School which was named as "BEGUM ASIYA MAMMOO MEMORIAL BUILDING" in memory of Mr. K. U. Abdulla's Late Grand Mother.
- In the same year, a separate building was constructed to house the Academy for Women partly financed by Islamic Development Bank, Saudi Arabia. This was declared open by Her Excellency M. Fathima Bevi, the Governor of Tamil Nadu.
- Also in the year 2000, the Centenary Building of the AHI, was constructed to commemorate the centenary celebrations of the AHI. The building came into existence with liberal contributions from donors and was inaugurated by Her Excellency M. Fathima Bevi, the Governor of Tamil Nadu.
- To accommodate sick children away from others and also to treat out- patients, the Health Centre was constructed in the campus and inaugurated on 4th March 2003 by Dr. C. Pratap Reddy, Chairman, Apollo Group of Hospitals in the presence of Justice Sirpurkar, the then Chief Justice of Madras High Court. While the Ground Floor was constructed with liberal donation from the Ahmed Brothers of AMSON in memory of their Late Mother "Mrs. SOFIA AHMED" , the First Floor was constructed with liberal donation from the "Abdul Rahman Sait Trust".
- In 2004, the AHI established Boys Section in the Anjuman Matriculation Higher Secondary School in a separate building in the campus, and this was inaugurated by Janab. Habibullah Badsha Sahib the President of AHI.
- In 2005, the Residential Block to house AHI Staff within the campus was constructed for better supervision of the inmates. It was inaugurated by Mr. U. Md. Khalilullah Sahib, the President of AHI on 18th August 2005.
- The Primary Block with four laboratories for the higher secondary classes was inaugurated by Shri Surjit Singh Barnala, the then Governor of Tamilnadu in the year 2008.
- In 2009, "ALHAJ T. ABDUL WAHID SAHIB CONFERENCE HALL" a grand state-of-the-art Conference Hall with a seating capacity of 45, was constructed and donated to AHI by Janab. T. Rafeeq Ahmed Sahib, President of AHI. The conference hall was named after AHI's Past President as "ALHAJ T. ABDUL WAHID SAHIB CONFERENCE HALL".
- The need to provide a safe and comfortable hostel for the ex-residents of the AHI Girls Home pursuing higher studies in colleges is also now taken care of and the new hostel block was inaugurated in the year 2009. This was declared open by Janab. M. M. Hashim Sahib.
- In 2012, the Vocational Training Centre for Girls was constructed, fitted with all required infrastructure and donated to AHI by Dr. Junaid Rasheed and Mrs. Sadiya Junaid. On 9th April 2012 Padmashri Mecca Rafeeq Ahamed Sahib declared open the building which was named as "TAHERA RASHEED SAHIBA" Vocational Training Centre for Girls in memory of Dr. Junaid Rasheed's late mother Mrs. Tahera Rasheed Sahiba.
